Abstract
Acute pericarditis is a syndrome due to inflammation of the pericardium characterized by chest pain, a pericardial friction rub and serial electrocardiographic abnormalities. The incidence of pericardial inflammation detected in several autopsy series ranges from 2 to 6 percent, whereas pericarditis is diagnosed clinically in only about, 1 of 1000 hospital admissions. The most common causes of the syndrome of acute pericarditis include idiopathic or viral pericarditis, uremia, bacterial infection, acute myocardial infarction, pericadiotomy associated with cardiac surgery, tuberculosis, neoplasm, and trauma. Purulent pericarditis, among others, has become a rare disease, with an incidence of 0.8% in autopsy studies prior to 1943 and of 0.26% between 1944 and 1975. While Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Streptococcus pyogenes were the predominate isolates recover<~d prior 1961, gram negative aerobic bacilli,. fungi, and, rarely, anaerobic bacteria were recovered in studies performed in the 1970s. Klebsiella pericarditis is a rare case of purulent pericarditis. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of Klebsiella pericarditis in Korea. Here we ,are describing a case of Klebsiella infection involving lungs, pericardium occuring in a 56-}year-old diabetic patient with lung cancer.
